I got hit in the mouth, is my tooth dying? - Dental Health Message Board

Hello,

A month ago I got hit in the mouth during a flag football game, and my front tooth was bent inward. I was able to move back into place a few hours later. It was painful for a few days. I tried the cold test using an ice cube. I can feel the cold on my damaged tooth, but the sensitivity is not as strong as the healthy tooth. The color has also change very slightly a darker yellow. If I tap on the tooth with my finger, it's feels a little tender.

Can anyone tell me if my tooth is dying, or if it will heal itself?

That will depend on how your nerve reacts. A delayed yellow coloring after trauma means your tooth is laying down more dentin inside...like a broken bone will reinforce itself with more bone around a fracture site. Sometimes these teeth can heal and as long as the color does not bother you, may not need any treatment.

If you are still tender a month later, I would suggest seeing a dentist. It's possible knocking that tooth out of position, it may not have gone back completly and your bite could be slightly off, causing that tenderness to persist. This is a very easy thing to fix, just takes adjusting the bite slightly.

I got hit in the mouth also, my tooth did the same as yours. This happened 2 days before my wedding. My tooth was O.K. for the wedding although I did have a bit of a swollen lip. Fast forward 15 years, I had to get a root canal on that tooth. Also, my tooth kept getting darker and darker, so I got bonding on my front teeth, now I have veneers. So, I think the answer is, the tooth will die if not taken care of, you will probably need a root canal to save it.
