Swollen Bump above Partial Wisdom Tooth - Dental Health Message Board

I just started getting pain in the far back right side of my mouth and noticed that there is like a swollen bump slightly above where one of my wisdom teeth is partially coming in. It is not too painful when I touch it, but it hurts a lot when I swallow because of its location, it presses down against the wisdom tooth every time I swallow, which is causing it to hurt. Advil gives me some slight relief, but the swelling never really goes away. It feels almost like a blister in my mouth. It has no real coloring to it. It is right on the corner of the cheek/gum line. Some research has pointed me in the direction of this possibly being a type of abscess. Is this possible? If so, how serious? What should be done? If not, what are other possibilities? Thank you.

Its very possible that what you describe is an abcess. You should go see your dentist to see if its an abcess, or what else it could be. Pain and swelling are never a good thing, and they can help you get rid of whatever is causing the problem.

Sounds similar to problem i had once, i left it too long hoping it would clear itself, but ended becoming really bad and had no choice but a course of antibiotics followed by removal, my advice... Get to the dentist right now!

I went to dentist today. It is not an infection, at least so he says. Apparently it is the very edge of my partial wisdom tooth digging up through the gum so close to the gum of the cheek that it is growing "into" the gum and causing the bump. Basically, the bump is actually hanging over the tooth with the edge of the tooth slightly inside the bump, which is cutting the skin slightly, causing the pain. Need to have the removed as soon as I can as it can soon become infected if not taken EXTRA care of.
