can I hold off on extracting abcessed tooth?

ok, so I am to go in tomorrow morning to have a possible apectomy or an extraction for #3, which was root canaled/crowned years ago...which they don't think need re-root canaled. Having learned I can't afford this apectomy anyway, I am thinking I need to just have it yanked. I have so many other things to deal with in my mouth, I feel it could be a waste and I will end up yanking it in a year or two anyway. Not that I want to lose it (just at the end of my smile and I am a performer ), nor can I afford the partial or implant to replace it.

Here are my questions:
1. should I try for unaffordable apectomy or just get it yanked?
2. can I delay either procedure based on below...

The pain on this tooth was SOOOO excruciating this week. Unlike any of my past 7 or so root canal pains. That horrid pain seems to be subsiding as the antibiotics must be working. Can I delay this extraction/apectomy process another week or two while I go spend some time with mom as she recovers from her surgery? Will I be in agony again in a week?

Anyone have any idea? Any crystal balls?

Thank you!!

Abscesses in the jaws are not something you should mess around with. Having any infection in your head always have the potential of getting to your brain. I would have it pulled out today, rest tomorrow, and go see your mother the third day. That's just me, but my hubby lost an old friend to an untreated abscess tooth.

Hi didiva ~

I second the importance of the infection and location.
That is nothing to put off.
Glad to read, your on anti-biotics.
Your pain should ease as the anti-biotic starts killing off the infection. YET,
You, really are the only one that knows how your body responds to anti-biotics. There are a lot of variables in what your body is going through. It's only you, that knows when an anti-biotic is working or not, and if it's really getting better ? You know what it was like, when it was screaming !! Ouch, ! Also, if the anti-biotics only help to a certain extent and low and behold your visiting someone, and it flares up it's ugly head. Your the one thats gonna be at the pain level you don't want to be in.
Let alone, if the infection travels elseware and throughout your body.

It's just so close to your Brain.... .... didiva

Do you really think, that the Dentist will pull the tooth with the infection looming behind it...? or wait till 110% surety of no infection.
Wonderful to read the pain is lessoning.

In speaking for myself... I sure would wait on the pull or work vs awakening Dino~Germ ! Gnawing ~ ~ ~ at the other nerve endings of my other teeth and or the rest of my body....

Do you have any idea why your needing so many root canals ? or, I should ask, if I may ?
Why are your Pearlie Whites needing so many rootcanals ?
Sorta like, what is my body not getting, for it to respond like this ?

Best Regards: DRAIN BAMAGED

Re: can I hold off on extracting abcessed tooth?

thanks so much for your responses! I realize this is nothing to take lately and I want to take care of it a.s.a.p. I also am not sure they will want to take care of it before the infection is entirely gone either, but one surgeon was ready to pull it on Wednesday if I gave him the go ahead. I just wanted to have the option for him to examine it and see if he could save it. That was before I realized how expensive that option is and that I can't actually afford it.

So, I am probably having it yanked tomorrow

I just wondered if I shouldn't wait until before my trip to take care of mom. She is in another city, and I will be gone from Saturday until Memorial Day. I guess I will just be swollen and hopefully on pain meds on the train all day Saturday.

sigh.

thanks for your responses!! Best of luck with all your tooth fun.

Re: can I hold off on extracting abcessed tooth?

I have the same problem and the same dilema. I am trying to decide to pull or save the tooth. My doctor gave me a steroid pack and my unbeleivable pain was gone within hours. I have not taken any other pain pills. I am taking Penicilin simply because I had a knee replacement and have to take them if I have my teeth worked on. I still have the problem and need to make a decision of pulling or saving the tooth. I do not have dental insurance so my choice is limited. I have a short window with the steriods and the penicilin. I have researched a lot on my choices and the outlook is not great. Even with the expensive surgery there is no promise that it will not come back. Any infection remaining can cause havoc in your mouth, bones, throat etc. Although I took great care of my teeth while I had insurance this happened in a molar with rootcanal years ago. I don't want to loose the tooth but moneywise I have no choice....Hope this helped. The steroid MEDRAL pack was a Godsent....
