Root Canal/crown so many appointments? Am I getting jerked around?

I had a root canal done recently.
1st appt removed the root, the tooth was filled with some temporary fairly soft medicated filling.
2nd appt the temporary very soft filling was removed, and a stronger temporary filling was put in.

3rd appt - molds taken and tooth filed down
4th appt - temporary crown placed on

Now I'm told I have to have another set of molds ????- so next appt that will happen. Then another appt for the metal crown, then another for porcelain -

I don't understand why the first mold couldn't be used for part 2.
I think the 2 step metal then porcelain is to check for allergic reactions but this number of appointments just seems absurd and I think they're ripping me off.

I'm dealing with non English speaking drs - and even though I am perfectly able to ask questions and get answers, it seems that they never give me the full story.

Obviously I'm not happy with this dentist, but at the same time I am not about to try and switch in the middle of the process - however as soon as this is done - they'll not see me again!

Does this number of steps seem odd to anyone else? Can anyone give me any logical reason for all these steps. My brother-in-law just had everything done in 2 appointments in Canada, I'm so jealous!!!!!

4 appointments for me. One with the specialist to remove the nerve. 3 more with the dentist. The first one was to make molds, grind down the tooth and put a temp in. next appointment is for the post. Last appointment for the final crown.
I always wonder why I have pain when there is no nerve.

Re: Root Canal/crown so many appointments? Am I getting jerked around?

I will likely have several appointments for my root canal.

1 with Endodontist to remove the nerve. If there's no inflammation, he said he could do the temp filling right away, but there was (not surprising).
2 with Endo to do the temp filling.
3 with dentist for the crown. I had a crown before, seems like I had 1 for a mold & temp crown and then only went back once for the actual crown. But, that was an awful experience and my tooth has never been right...

It does sound strange to need 2 sets of molds...

Re: Root Canal/crown so many appointments? Am I getting jerked around?

Call your insurance company if you have dental insurance and discuss it with them. Dentists are money making machines and they are never scrutinized like Doctors are. They should be. I spent 6,000. out of pocket last year on a failed root canal and failed bridge...... I now have a new dentist. I was ripped off but good luck collecting from a dentist.

Hopefully your Dentist and Endodontist is good. My Endodontist is who told me I should have NEVER had a root canal done on that tooth or a bridge attached to it. But he will not say that in court. I had 3 months of serious toothache and out a bunch of money and now no tooth back there. I could have had it pulled for 250. Now I am out a back tooth and 6.000.

My Insurance company was wonderful and they cleared up many issues for me. So if you have Insurance go to them and run this treatment plan by them. I wish I would have talked to mine before I started the treatment.

Good luck to you!!! Oleander

Re: Root Canal/crown so many appointments? Am I getting jerked around?

I think you may be getting jerked around a bit. I recently had a root canal, filling material applied and post implanted in that tooth, and two other teeth extracted in one visit. A small piece of the tooth broke off about two weeks later - due to the now dead tooth starting to become brittle, and my dentist then did install a temporary crown doing the molding, filing, and acrylic temporary crown application all in the second visit. I will need a third visit in about six months to a year to have the permanent crown molded and installed. I'd check with another dentist in your area, but my personal opinion is that they are not doing as much as they should in each visit. By the way, my dentist also happens to be a specialist in implants as well as general dentistry, and I'm EXTREMELY happy with him, as you can probably tell.
