Is a root canal always necessary for a crown?
My dentist recommended that I get a crown put on an upper back tooth. This is because the tooth is mostly filling right now (very little of the real tooth is left I guess) and the filling has grinded to a sharp point and is rough (I can feel it with my tongue). He also recommended a dental guard as it appears I am grinding my teeth in my sleep. He thought with my bite problems, if I don't do this, the grinding will begin to interfere with my other upper teeth on that side and I will need even more crowns.
A friend asked if I would need a ride to the office that day since getting a crown would also require a root canal. My dentist didn't even mention a root canal to me. Are they always necessary when getting a crown? (I am currently having no pain associated with this tooth).
