wisdom tooth: root canal vs. extraction

Hi all. Two separate dentist advised me with two different opinions on the same problem. I have a wisdom tooth in bad shape; one dentist advised me to have it extracted. The second dentist advised me to have a root canal on the wisdom tooth (1200 dollars) and has yet to disclose the cost of the accompanying crown. The tooth above the wisdom tooth is gone. Anyone have suggestions on which option I should choose??

Re: wisdom tooth: root canal vs. extraction

ABSOLUTELY have the tooth removed. If it's in bad shape, doing root canal and then either a crown or an implant are so costly for a wisdom tooth that in my opinion, it's TOTALLY unwarranted.

Definitely remove it...esp since the one above is gone. There is no point in spending all that money on a wisdom with a vacant space above/below it

Re: wisdom tooth: root canal vs. extraction

Hey Wood...I had a root canal then cap on a wisdom tooth at age 30ish, and it was problematic for over a year - gum swelling discomfort - removed cap 2 x's & reset. Then approx 1-1/2 years later on the night of Good Friday I had sudden constant ear & temple pain so severe I literally was considering death was the only way out...so went to ER - long story short it was the stupid wisdom tooth so had to wait til morning for Emergency Dental Center visit (my guy was out for the holiday) & the treating Dentist was shocked that anyone would even consider capping a wisdom tooth!!!! All that money down the tubes along with several days of torture all to have it all yanked out and thrown away. Advice to you...Have that sucker pulled ASAP!!!! Good luck -C
