I've had it done, too. I have to agree with "missing9". Once they numbed my gums, I never felt a thing. I did a quadrant at each of four visits. Didn't bother me at all.
It shouldn't hurt that much unless they don't numb you. Perhaps TessaAnne is talking about osseous gum surgery (or "Flap" surgery)? I do understand that can be painful while it heals.
My DH has had both and only the flap surgery bothered him.
Root scaling and planing should not be painful while done and is only a teeny bit uncomfortable after.
It's really nothing more than a VERY deep cleaning to remove debris and plaque further down that 3mm.
Please don't be scared, PS11. It shouldn't be painful at all. Be sure you are numb before hand, that's all.
