Braces with periodontal disease

Hi Folks,

I have perio disease - on some teeth it is advanced, on some it is moderate. I am about 30 years old and have had perio disease since age 20.

My dentist recommends wearing braces once the perio is in control. I went through a scaling and root planing recently and next month the periodontist will let me know if I am braces ready.

I've searched online about this but would like to hear real stories. Do you know anyone who regrets having got braces as an adult? Do you know if the perio just got worse and the teeth fell out? Or do you have any experiences to share?

This is my second round of braces.. first one was as a pre-teen. I know I will have to wear those retainers for 3-4 years after my braces are removed. And I am afraid that could exacerbate the perio.

I have a whole month to think about this and I want to make an informed decision. Please share your stories/thoughts.

Thanks very much!
