Question Root canal a few years ago and now have pain.

I had a root canal several years ago in my molar. Now all of a sudden I have pain when I chew. It's pretty bad. It's a ache moreso than a sharp pain. But its very sensitive. I made an appt for tomorrow to have it looked at, as well as have a cleaning so I hope its okay. I also have a crown on that tooth. So I'm not sure what they can do to fix the tooth. I'm wondering if it'll need to be pulled.

Re: Root canal a few years ago and now have pain.

Hi,
There are so many things that may have happened to your tooth. It may have started to decay under the crown. Do you hae a post in it?
You may have cracked the root. Root canaled teeth can be very brittle and fracture easily.

The only way to find out is by what you are doing. Going to the dentist to have it evaluated and cleaned. Xrays will be able to tell, for the most part, if there is decay below the crown and your dentist should be able to give you some options then.

Good luck with your appt! Please let us know how you do.

My very best to you,
Gellia

I do not have a post in it. I don't remember chewing on anything hard so I hope it's not cracked. I'll post back tomorrow after my appointment and let you know what they did. Thanks for your quick reply

Doc prescribed vicodin and an antibiotic. He said that if the pain is still there after the antibiotic is done then I'll need to see my endodontist. Eek! But the pain comes and goes so I think it'll be okay.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm glad to hear everything worked out OK.

Good luck and I hope the antibiotic takes care of it.

I'll let you know if the antibiotic fixed it. So far the vicodin has not taken the pain away when I eat... I don't have much pain otherwise, only when the tooth is pressed upon by food or something. I'll post back in about a week with any news.

It seems the antibiotic fixed the pain I was having. That and the vicodin lol. So I'm good now. No pain.

That's WONDERFUL!! I'm glad the antibiotics work. Do be sure to take the entire prescription. Otherwise you can just "tickle" those bugs and they can come back bigger and stronger and nastier.

Best to you! Here's to being pain free!
