Killing a nerve without root canal surgery

A friend of mine needs a root canal but due to cancer medications cannot have surgery (root canal).

The current treatment plan for the tooth is to have daily injections of pain med + anti-inflammatory, while waiting for the tooth nerve to die naturally. A process that may take a few weeks.

I'm wondering if there wouldn't be a non-surgical way to kill the tooth nerve?

Thanks for any ideas!
