Alarming Weight Loss
Over two years ago, I came down with Swine Flu (H1N1) and was down on my back for six weeks. Coming slowly out of it, I was knocked down again by the regular flu a couple of weeks later. In all, I lost over 21 pounds. I'd weighed 122 pounds, just 4 pounds over the limit of my maximum weight range for someone of my height, five feet. I couldn't gain the weight back. And I looked horrible. The sudden weight loss left me with a terrible loss in muscle tone and my skin hung on me like someone much older. I tried to gain some of it back since I knew most of it was certainly muscle loss along with fat. No dice. Instead, my appetite's been flat, my sense of taste is diminished; nothing tastes good and my weight has dropped down even more and is now at 94. My doctors have done upper and lower Bariums of my GI, CTs of my abdomen, colonoscopies and even brain CTs and MRIs to rule out brain tumors. Nothing. A couple of days ago, it suddenly occured to me that it might be from the Topomax I'm taking for my seizures. I know Topomax causes weight loss, but it's odd that it would coincide with the time period that I caught H1N1. But, I'm getting alarmed. I've had a few heart palpitations recently. I'm afraid that my weight loss is affecting my cardiac system. But, my doctors really can't find anything wrong with me.
