dull ache in jaw after filling

I had a filling done 3 weeks ago with no issues, now I have a dull ache in jaw under tooth that was worked on. The tooth is not senseitive to hot or cold, just aches when I chew on crunchy foods. Is there a way to tell if I have an infection starting or just normal from having the tooth worked on? One other point is the dentist did a 3 layer filling which is fairly deep, plus they filled the tooth and less then a week later had to drill out filling and replace it due to imperfection
