Is my tooth falling out?

Ok, so for about 2 months now, the tooth next to my 2 big top front teeth has been feeling weird. Basically, at the base of the gum (where the tooth meets the gum) it feels like... there's another layer. A deeper layer underneath the normal tooth. It feels quite rough, and when I scratch it for a while, it starts to hurt quite badly until I stop. It's a strip of another layer, as it feels like. As though the gum was covering it. So, What is this? What does this mean? Does this mean my tooth may be falling out?
I don't brush that often. And also, how lose should a tooth feel when you wiggle it a little? I'm not too concerned about that last part, but the rough layer thing I'm very anxious about.

All help appreciated.

Re: Is my tooth falling out?

Go to the dentist for a cleaning. I'm not sure what you're describing, but it could be plaque or it could be something caught near the gum line.

Look up a picture of "gum disease." Do your gums look red, with swollen pockets near the teeth? Could that be part of the problem?

Your teeth should not feel loose when wiggled. It sounds like you really need to brush more often and floss every day.
