Resorption, now what?

I was at the dentist for my regular checkup when the hygienist said "I see something on the xray, looks like it might be resorption." Dentist came in and said he agrees, wants me to see an endodontist. The teeth affected both have gold crowns, which makes me wonder if the crowns caused it. No other tooth has it. The shadow extended from the middle of a molar to the outside edge. He said it is internal, that the outside feels normal. He said I will at least need a root canal to fix it. Just want to ask what to expect and what my options are. Thanks
