Severe Pain 5 days after Wisdom Teeth Removal

Hey there,

I have been reading some posts on the forum and really need some help, i feel like i am going out of my mind.
I had my 2 lower wisdom teeth out 5 days ago, under GA, and they were partially erupted and facing the back molars, so quite tricky. They were a nightmare as i couldn't properly brush them etc and so had them out.

First couple days were ok, had my prescription drugs and was ok. But then Monday i had severe, excruciating pain in my head like the worst migrane ever. I had to lie down and steady myself. At the same time, i started getting this strange tense pain seemingly from the right extraction site, but only really when i tried to open my mouth or eat or drink. My Jaw has started to kind of cease or something and it is agony to do anything physical with my mouth. It comes on quickly, like a cramp and is really throbbing and the only thing i found that is relieving is a moist heatpack in the microwave held to my face.

So i went back to the dentist yesterday and saw a different dentist to my oral surgeon (i am seeing my surgeon tomorrow)and explained the pain and he didn't say much but packed it with that gum stuff - the clove oil stuff - which helped with the pain from the extraction site a little, but not really, as i think the pain is actually radiating from my jaw - which he didnt even look at or ask about. He said to take ibuprophen. Like i havent already!!!!
So no new prescription for anything stronger, which i should have said something about but didn't for some reason.
He said it could be the start of dry socket and said it could be a bit of bacteria in the hole. But he didnt clean it, he just packed it with the gum.

He told me to salt rinse, which i do. i have dissolved clove oil in water and held it in my mouth (works a bit).
Brushing my teeth hurts and it seems like my tongue is bigger.

I am on antibiotics which i received as part of my post op prescription, so i thought it if was an infection surely that would prevent it??

i opened my jaw and closely looked at my teeth and no matter how still i am, it seems as though my teeth are chattering all the time...you can only see it when you look closely, but i think my jaw is ceasing up.

Can someone help me? i have cried so much and so in pain and considering going to the ER.. thanks

Re: Severe Pain 5 days after Wisdom Teeth Removal

Hi:
You could possibly have a dry socket, however this could be something else because of your jaw problems. What it seems like is that your jaw had to be forced open to remove your lower impacted wisdom teeth, and this could have strained the muscles in your jaw and you have trigger points. The large biting muscle of your jaw, if it's in spasm, can refer pain to your teeth. Also, with these teeth removed, your second molar could have shifted slightly back and caused your bite to be of, leading to the pain and jaw problems.
Either way, after you visit the oral surgeon for a follow up, you may want to seek some help for a dentist to check your bite and make your teeth hit evenly on both sides, and/or you may require a clear dental appliance to allow your jaw to relax.

Re: Severe Pain 5 days after Wisdom Teeth Removal

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

I am actually hoping it is dry socket on the one side, as i think i have been scaring myself reading the TMJ forum. I had no idea that it could be something so chronic and serious, dentists don't seem to really tell you what it actually means.

It has been so painful i have been crying such a lot over the last few days, it has been unbearable. I am seeing my oral surgeon today and i will ask for more pain relief.

I will let you know what it is!
