New pain after recent root canal and crown

About a month and a half ago I got two root canals (upper back molars right next to each other.) I got the crowns put on a couple weeks later, so that means I've had them on for about a month.

They started out a little sore, but slowly that was going away and I could eventually eat on that side with just a little discomfort. The furthest back tooth (#2) was taking a little longer to get comfortable.

Just last night while I was eating something relatively soft, I noticed quite a pain in the back molar. It is certainly a lot different than it ever was since the crowns were put on. It's sore when I bite down on anything, and sensitive to hot and cold liquids. Even contact with my inner lip when I'm talking causes pain.

I went to the dentist and the root canal specialist who did the root canals looked at them. I got x-rays, anti-inflammitories, and pain killers. She said it might be a bruised tooth, or possibly needs to be drilled and cleaned out. And to wait for a couple months.

I'm not too certain I can wait for a couple months. How would I know if the tooth or root is cracked? The pain started immediately last night when I was eating, and has been the same for almost 24 hours now.

Any ideas what might be going on? I can't really even chew too much on the opposite side, since that will still cause the affected tooth to hit the ones below it. It was easier before the crowns were even put on!

You should not be having pain. You need to go back to the dentist and insist that something be done or get a referral for another opinion. I've had many root canals and crowns and never had pain after the crown was placed. The only issue I've ever had was the need to have the crown filed down a little because my bite was slightly off. I wish you well. :)

OK so I'm a sceptic. Cleaned out means a root canal but u said u already had one. It is unprofessional to be told to "wait a couple MONTHS" when on painkillers. Next, a tooth cant bruise; can you bruise a tooth? No. But a tooth's root can be cracked but you said they removed the root, right? It sounds like the dentist has a big Christmas vacation planned but, if not, he wants to Very Much avoid admitting he either made a mistake , did a bad job, left something out or whatever. He knows you can't answer and , believe me, doctors and dentists like to rack up big bucks near Christmas. I have friends in your boat. It's shameful.

sometimes molars have auxiliary canals that even a very skilled Endodontist can miss as they can be very difficult to find. That might be your case, and that part of the untreated nerve is still infected.

good luck

" even a VERY skilled Endodontist can miss as they can be very difficult to find." Who would ever go to such a "specialist?" If HE can't do the job than NO ONE can.

Unlike math, where 2+2 always equals four, dentistry like medicine is not an exact science. Auxiliary canals sometimes can be so small that they do not show up on x-rays, or because they were over shadowed by the larger canal.

If Scorpio needed a root canal because of a cracked tooth that compromised the pulp chamber, the continued discomfort could be a result because the crack resulted in a fractured root. Depending upon the severity, these typically don't show up on x-rays either.

Oh yes, do you have a sinus infection? Sometimes those can play havoc with your upper molars and make them really hurt to the point where you can't chew.

Again good luck, and if discomfort continues contact your dentist. And if she is away for X-mas break, she should have someone one call for emergencies.

I hope I can get this resolved by X-mas break! The procedure of getting root canal work done already made my B-day and Halloween a hassle.

No sinus infection, and it definitely only hurts on the one tooth. I got anti-inflammitory steroid pills. I'm hoping the problem is actually with my gumline or something. I think the root canal specialist meant that the bruising could be on my gum. It's definitely not any different after the last day, so I'm going on 48 hours of this now ):

My tooth wasn't cracked at any point, and just needed the root canal because I went in for a filling replacement, and they found it was really decaying inside. If they need to drill and do more root canal, I can get by as long as it isn't a cost to me - otherwise I'll have to have it extracted and deal with missing an upper molar. I've read that if it's the farthest back molar, then it won't cause any problems if there is just no tooth there.
