Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Chronic Depression?
The Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Chronic, Treatment-Resistant Depression is up for final review of approval by the FDA on June 15, 2004.

Anybody here planning to try it?

Thanks, Index & Possum, for keeping me from drying away on the vine here!

I have a website that tells all abt this procedure. I believe the site would meet w/brd approval, but think I should run it by mod1 before posting it.

Basically, this procedure has been done on abt 22,000 people to treat epilepsy. Patients reported that they received mood elevations from the Vagus Nerve Stimulator that had been implanted under the skin of their chests. Sooo, they started doing studies on using the same implant to treat chronic depression that hasn't responded to other therapies.

The implant can probably be done on an out-patient basis and take 45 mins to an hour.

scary, but interesting, don't you think? I mean, for people who have tried everything else?

Thanks, Possum! I'm sure glad to hear that my summary was good since Mod1 Pointed out to me that the website I had hoped to post here links to a DSBA discussion forum & may not be posted!

At any rate, if the FDA approves this procedure for the treatment of depression, everybody will hear abt it when the first depressed person w/the implant decides to commit suicide!;-)
