new to lexapro - side effects

I have been on lexapro for 1 week, and I am feeling very strange. My head feels very 'cloudy', and I feel jittery, and I am having difficulty concentrating at work, is this normal? This is my first time ever on anti depresants

Re: new to lexapro - side effects

What dosage are you on? Are you taking anything else with it? I have just been switched today to lexapro. My Doctor told me that 10 mg of Lexapro is equal to 40 mg of Celexa so it is a very potent drug. Your dose may need to be reduced. I would love to hear how you are doing and if you are adjusting to the med.

THANKS BYRDLEG

Re: new to lexapro - side effects

I have been on lexapro over a month now. I was doing just fine until about now. I think i am beginning to have side effects. My husband asked me about the bruses on my back side. And my head is not clear like a fog. and i can not remember details of what i have been doing. I usually have a very sharp mind, even with the depression
I am not sure what to do. the lexapro has greatly reduced the depression but i do not like not being able to remember . It is like looking a a picture and only parts of the picture are viewable. Areas are hazy. Anyone easle having similar symptoms? I was taking 10mg and and now taking 20mg. The 10 mg worked for about 2 weeks and then i went to 20mg and that took the edge off the depression. I feel chemically better.

Re: new to lexapro - side effects

I've been on Lexapro for almost three months, and I'm taking the 10mg dose a day. I was on 20mg until about four days ago, because I believe it was causing me to have terrible mood problems. I have OCD, and I was noticing a severe spike in my obsessions and moods. This may not be a common side affect at all, but I wonder if anyone else has experienced that. I think it stemed from my body possibly not being ready for the higher dose of Lexapro after a while of being on the starting dose--10mg.

Re: new to lexapro - side effects

Why was your dosage increased? Was it working ok? I ahve experienced major jumps in my panic if the dose gets to high on one of the SSRI meds. Do you have any other side effect from the Lexapro. Does the 10 mg seem to help you?

Take Care

Re: new to lexapro - side effects

Thankyou for all the replies. I took 10mg a day for 8 days. I told my doctor of my side effects, (inability to think through problems at work, feeling nausious, feeling jittery and panicky(sp) etc') and he told me to just stop taking it for a while then he would put me on something else. Well, its been 8 days since I stopped taking it, and I still feel the side effects. I am very concerned about how long they are lasting, is this normal? I know some drugs are long acting, meaning the half life of the active ingredient takes a long time to attain
(eg. testosterone). I will tell you that I am also a recovering alcoholic (I just celebrated 10 years sober) and I never experienced anything like this even in my drinking and using days!!. I also told my Doctor that I had some Vicodins at home and that the day before, when I felt a panic attack come on I took one and it seemed to mellow me out a little. He told me to take the Vicodins for a few days if I felt that way again until the side effects wore off. I don't want to get hooked on Vicodins though. I can't believe that I only took Lexapro for a week, and I still feel out of it....

The usual withdrawal period is 7 days, but since you only took it for 8 days, I'm surprised it's still going on. You shuold tell your doctor.

I don't know if Vicodin does this to everyone, but they interfere with my sleep - I just drift instead of really sleeping - so they could make your problems worse, since you may not be getting quality sleep.

Re: new to lexapro - side effects

Now, I am even more freaked out about taking this med than ever. I can't ever balance my need to know more with the fact that reading about this stuff ends up making me mortally afraid of the med and likely helps me form a bad opinion which only leads to failure when I take it.

I haven't even tried for years, but SSRI's have always made me feel "cloudy," "freaked out," and "jumpy." All the kind of stuff that I simply can't tolerate and that my doctor felt Lexapro might give me less problems with.

Of course, he made sure to tell me to take it in the morning. Which in Dr. Speak means it's gonna be like speed, so don't take it before going to sleep, which, of course, I can't even do, I just lie awake until at some point I pass through extreme sleepiness and just pass out.

I only chirped in to say, these were pretty common side effects from other SSRI's and not to worry. But I've never had them last more than a day or two max and I've had just about every pill and in every dose that can be created by scientists and a pill cutter.

I still have read some of the best comments about this med than I have of most others. It's gonna be this or mood stabilizers (aka-the stuff they shoot into Moose when they happen into someone's backyard), so I'm praying that I don't get the jitters like you did. Although, now I fully expect that I will, even if I cut my pill into 5 or 2.5.

Weight gain and the jittery feeling are worse than the depression and the depression is absolutely, mind-numbingly horrible. Drats.

Good luck

I was on Lexapro for a month and have been off of it now for 10 days and i am still having side effects. My joints and hips still hurtbut the pain has lessened. My stomack is upset after eating and i was dizzy today and fatigue. I had a tooth ack but it may have just been part of the withdrawl from the lexapro. My denist could not find anything wrong. So he held off doing anything and said to come back asap if the pain came back.

Something interesting though: While i was on the Lexapro i was constantly going to the bathroom and since i have stopped taking it that business of urgency has stopped. I was waking up two and three times a night. I am also sleeping better at night. My mind is clearing and i am having a better remembrace of what is going on around me.

It is frustarating because i feel like i still need to be on the Lexapro. I had really wanted to stick with it for at least 6 mo. and really going for a year.
At the moment i think i am ok.( not depressed). very tired so i am not sure... hope it is just being tired after a long hard day of work.

Congrades to you on staying Sober for 10 Years!!!!

Re: new to lexapro - side effects

I spoke w/ my dr. who said it was my clogs!! i had blood work and it came back pos. ANA which could mean lupis..........I'm seeing a specialist later but i've stopped the lexapro because i'm afraid its causing the pos. ANA and possibly 'drug induced SLE'
but no, they don't hurt or anything, just look bad and aren't normal.
