I understand Xanax and Ativan are basically the same class of drug. Yet Ativan seems to do absolutely nothing to me. Like taking a sugar pill. Xanax on the other hand works great for me. Anyone else find Ativan ineffective?

Re: Ativan

My mom had lung cancer and was put on ativan by hospice

and it put her into a coma. Although the doctor only had

her on one pill at a time the hospice nurse bumped it up to

two. After weaning her off she came out of the coma and

lived for 3 more months. I talked to several others at

hospice about ativan and alot had similar situations as

my moms reaction to ativan. The stuff scares me now.

Re: Ativan

Ativan and xanax are in a drug group called the benzodiazepenes. Ativan is now popular because it is a "short-acting" benzo - this means that it clears out of the body in a short time. Valium, which has a bad reputation is actually a good drug. It stays in the body for a long time, so you need less. It is also the drug of choice for getting off of benzos. Xanax is the most effective of the benzos but is also the most addictive. Getting off xanax is supposed to be difficult.
People react differently to the different benzos. So what happened to one person may not happen to another.

Re: Ativan

I also take Ativan too.. I'm suppossed to take it once a day, but I usually just take it whenever I'm feeling extra anxious. As I understand it, Ativan and Xanax are the same thing, but Xanax is a stronger anti-anxiety med and is also more addictive. A lot of people say they feel too groggy or drugged out on these meds, but if I take them before bed I'm fine.
