I was wondering if depression cause long term health problems. I feel like i have aids but i don't. I have all kinds of medical problems and for no reason. I am very young and in my 20s.

Hi A1Nerd
In my opinion, and the opinion of various health-related magazines/journals/ tv shows, your outlook on life plays an invaluable role in how your body responds to things like stress, illness, and disease. For example, if you believe that you will recover from an illness, you tend to make that belief a reality just by beleiving that you will recover. If, on the other hand, you believe that you will be ill for the rest of your life, your body will, most likely, follow in suite. Does this make sense? I have noticed this from my own experiences: when I have been depressed, I tend to become sick much more easily than if I feel happy with my life and think that it's going somewhere (as I tend to these days). What do you think of this?

A1,

Before you jump on the AD rollercoaster, (and without me knowing from what else you suffer), let me throw an idea out your way. There are alot of things that could be contributring to your health problems. Hormones, thyroid, nutrient malabsorbtion...even food allergies. Oddly enough...food allergies contribute to alot of physical problems.....some that I'm sure would surprise you. IBS, Depression, Anxiety, Fibromyalgia, Autism, ADHD...these are just some of the things that food allergies can cause or contribute to.

Please see your doc and ask if he/she's willing to look for the underlying cause of your problems. Nobody has "all kinds of medical problems for no reason". If not, seek out an Internal Med doc, an Allergist, or an Environmental doc (if you can find one in yur area). While depression may exacerbate certain medical conditions...I don't believe it is the cause of them. A good therapist might also help you through this..... especially if this is a "mind over matter" problem as Musical Muse suggested.

I hope this makes some sense to you...or at least gives you a few other possibilities to explore. I wish you all the best in finding your good health.

Re: Depression cause illness?

Thank you for your comment. I have seen 5 ent drs many general practioners. I have spent tens of thousands trying to find the cause. I have had blood testes ct and mri scans and everything. No one could come to a conclusion. Someone suggested it might be my diet. If it is a food alllergy how to i find out wich one? I Had perfect sinus health until i got a sinus infection 2 years ago. It has been non stop hell since then i have been on everykind of antibiotic known to man and nothing helps me at all. I suffer from horrible taste in my mouth and bad breath caused from my sinuses. All of my health problems are in my sinuses. I thought a milk allregy was to blame but i doubt it since i never had problems before with dairy.

A1,

Wow....I've got so much information running around in my head...I don't even know where to begin!! I'm hoping to organize it enough that it makes sense to you....please bear with me!!

First off, blood tests, in the general sense, are not where you will necessarily find the answers to your problems. It is a good place to start, but those usually look for general things and not the underlying issues you need to find at this time. My husband had an IGG blood test (this is what you want to ask for). This is a very in depth test, and what helped diagnose my husbands problems.

Second, it's amazing what we can be allergic too!! More often than not, we crave what is the worst for us. Reactions are most normally very atypical. Until my husbands results came back...we had no clue that he was allergic to wheat, yeast, eggs and cow dairy products!! These were things he ate every day!! However, once removed.....he improved 100%.....virtually overnight!!

The fact that you have been on so many antibiotics, not to mention undue stress caused by your "uncurable illnesses", gives me a hunch that yeast may be a problem for you. Antibiotics, while they do good for somethings, can wreak havoc on your gut, (they destroy the good bacteria as well) rendering it's job function of healthy nutrient absorbtion, among other things, useless. This is what conbtributes to other health problems. Our body becomes deprived of what it needs to function normally.

Again, most standard docs aren't aware of (or quite possibly chose to ignore) these possibilities. If you can find yourself an Allergist that has knowledge of IGG testing, or treating your kinds of health issues...I would start there. If you have an Environmental Doc in your area....wonderful! This is the kind of doc that helped us, and I found him to be not only very knowledgeable, but very determined in helping my hubby get to the bottom of his problems!!

If you want to try the "self-help" route, I would suggest reading the book "Feast Without Yeast-4 Stages to Better Health" by Bruce Semon. This book not only explains what problems yeast can cause in a person, but takes you through a step by step "elimination" plan. According to the book, most people feel great just eliminating the foods in stage 1......others may have to "climb" higher to get the results the seek.

I hope I've answered you're questions....or at least given you a better idea of where to possibly go from here. I really hope you can find someone or something that brings you the relief you so rightfully deserve. I wish you the best of luck in your "search".

All my best,
mj
