Depression, without feeling depressed!!!

Im just came from yet another doctors apt today, where my doctor told me she believes Im suffering from depression, yet, I dont feel depressed. I've been continously going to see her over dizziness, feelings of being unbalanced and Im soooo tired all the time. Im not sure if the unbalanced feelings come from being tired. I go to bed exhaused, can't sleep, or sleep a few hours, wake up exhaused and can't get back to sleep. Im unmotivated because Im tired, I just seem to be continously slumped on the couch, but I had a baby 8 months ago and I put it off to being exhaused, however, shes a great sleeper and is sleeping 10 hours per night, so I have no excuse for being this way. Does this make sense to anyone??? I dont really want to be put on anti-depressants because I dont feel depressed, so I dont know what to do.

Could you not just ask for something to help you slept first, it may be that your other symptoms come from your lack of sleep? Don't accept anything you aren't comfortable with, your are in charge of your own health care.

Re: Depression, without feeling depressed!!!

Thank you for your response, and I actually did pick up the womens, once a day vitamins last weekend. The doctor said it takes about a month to notice any difference and she did also say to try to get out in the sun more, working indoor depletes us of, I think she said Vitamin B. She also told me to exercise and walk at least 1 mile a day. My mother and sister suffer from depression, however, no one ever told them to exercise, take vitamins and get more sun, and it really did make some sense to me. Im supposed to go back in a month and she'll go from there. I do get blood tests taken in the morning to see if theres a deficiency of some sort from when my baby was born. I really pray I dont have post partum depression, would I even know if I did?

Re: Depression, without feeling depressed!!!

Depression isn't just about feeling sad. It can also be feeling tired, having no motivation, having no interest in things, etc. You are describing these types of feelings, so it is possible that you have depression.

Having said that, having a 10-month old is enough to exhaust anyone! Are you having trouble getting to sleep? Or is it that you are still tired no matter how much you sleep? Have you looked into the possibility of a sleep disorder or other medical problem? My sleep disorder was mis-diagnosed as a symptom of my depression for many years. Once I saw a sleep specialist my whole life changed! So, I wouldn't completely discount the possibility that you have depression, but I would try to make sure you have ruled out other causes first.

Good luck.

I doubt you have depression if you dont feel depressed. Sleep issues can definitely make you feel out of balance and make you dizzy. Make sure you stay up all day from when you wake up until bed time and if you cant sleep try a melatonin tea and if that doesnt work go get some sort of sleep aid. If you excercise daily and you are obviously have alot on your plate and you dont nap you should find it quite easy to sleep at night, dr's overprescribe antidepressants to the fullest extent possible even though they can help quite a bit I believe you need to just establish a wake sleep schedule exercise daily for at least 30 minutes an hr preferably and eat a balanced diet high in veggies fiber decent amount of protein and quality carbohydrates and I think youll be fine. If you feel depression coming up later dont hesitate to go see the dr again. Hope this helps

Re: Depression, without feeling depressed!!!

I find that drinking a hot, milky tea or hot chocolate before bed helps me. Maybe with a chocolate biscuit or cheese on crackers. I find comfort food (not enough to be a danger to any diet, but the occassional nighttime snack is helpful. Also, lavender oil helps with sleep, as do relaxation tapes and peaceful music. (Try enya, she's great.) Or something like a really boring documentary about the life cycle of north american hibernating crustaceans or some crappy movie that is so boring you to sleep. Meditation used to help me a lot. (Now I'm edgy around bedtime too.) My Dad's favourite nighttime remedy was to look at the stars or listen to the animals outside the house. (The again, my dad could drink coffee before bedtime and during the night and he would still sleep like a bloody log) It must be exhausting having a10 month old, but rewarding too. Good luck and sweet dreams.
