PLEASE HELP!! wrong diagnosis? - Depression Message Board

Hi!
I'm 20 years old and I recently went to the doctor for sudden and extreme symptoms. extreme fatigue, some nausea, and pelvic pain. He ordered bloodwork for 5 tests (by my request...to test for all things it could be so I don't have to keep going back...but not competely sure what all my tests were.) He origionally was going to test me for my Thyroid. Which, by the way, I received my results today and they all came back 'normal'.

I am extremely bothered by this because of his follow up orders. He told me to see my therapist and to be put on anti-depressants. What bothers me is that from all of my symptoms, he was sure it was thyroid. Now just because of the tests, I'm fine.

I believe I may be depressed, but depression still does not explain other physcial symptoms that I have. (i.e. brittle hair & nails, adult acne-worse now than I was a teenager. I was previously diagnosed with tendonitis, which can be linked to thyroid problems!). Also. I was diagnosed with clinical depression when I was 16, and even then I don't remember feeling this bad. I even took Zoloft and Celexa and they didn't seem to work. Actual counseling is what I believed help me through that.

I've done a little bit of research on the internet about mis-diagnosis and it only fuels my fire. This just doesn't make sense to me and I don't know what to do. My family and friends all think I'm crazy. But in my gut, something is telling me it's more than just depression. What does it sound like? More importantly, what can I do?

There were a few books on the subject of thyroid disorders. They talk about the test being wrong and you can have a test come out normal and still have a slight thyroid problem. I can't remember the name of the new one, I just saw it in borders the other day. I was put on thyroid for depression by one doctor because I felt it worked better than antidepressants. It does seem to do something for it. I was put on it in the beginning because of the side effect of other medication I was on a very small dose for years.

Now that I think about it the tests were always normal. What they ended up doing is a thyroid scan which was done with radioactive iodine to see how far it goes in your metabolism. They found I had a hot nodule what ever that was and I was put on medication to shrink it down. I felt so good on the thyroid meds I talked my doctor into keeping me on them. I did stop but was on them for years. I would try seeing an endocrinologist if you haven't seen one. They will know more about it then your regular doctor.

You could try taking the natural iodine from the healthfood store. Also you might look at your diet to see if there's anything there you change to make a difference.
