How to find a good psychiatrist/therapist?
I am moving to a new town next month and need to find a good psychiatrist and therapist (or someone who can do both). I'm nervous because I have been going to the same counselor for years, and she's the only one who has been helpful, I had gone to many others who were not, so I know that finding a good therapist is really hard, especially since so much of it depends on individual personality so one who is helpful for one person may not be helpful to another. Another problem is that I got counseling for free at my college, and now I will not be in college so I guess will have to pay for it. I really think I need therapy/counseling every week or at least every two weeks. Would insurance cover that?
I think I read about a referral service called 1-800 Therapist, has anyone tried that or any kind of referral service? How could one go about finding an effective therapist(counselor, psychologist or whatever they're called) or psychiatrist in a short amount of time? I'm afraid if I go too long without counseling I will sink back into a really bad depression and have a really hard time recovering. I already am having an extreme amount of anxiety due to having to move unexpectedly, and having to move in with my parents and find a full-time job, and for me I usually alternate between anxiety and depression. It's not bipolar disorder though (was once incorrectly diagnosed with that). I'm very concerned because I know I need therapy and I need meds (I'm okay with the ones I'm on but am just concerned that they may be causing weight gain). I know I need these things but I know how hard it is to find someone helpful, and I've gone to many in the past who have actually hindered my progress.
What is a good way to go about this? Are there particular questions I could ask to find out if a therapist (or psychiatrist, etc.) is right for me?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
