I know that here in Canada, your medical history is strictly confidential.....I work for a call center that does telephone triage (as an RN); the charts that we set up for our callers can be seen by the nurses only. If, for instance, there is some sort of legal issue (I had one caller who was beaten up by the police - he later phoned to say that he was going to lay charges against them......in that case, there are documents he needs to sign to release the chart) - the client has access to the chart. An employer CANNOT request your medical file - they can request things like a physical, blood work, chest x-ray, but not your medical records. They also cannot discriminate on the basis of a psych history. I should know.....as a 47 year old nurse with recurrent major depression, I have looked into this. Considering the percentage of people who suffer from these sorts of illnesses, it would certainly affect the employment rate if they didn't hire us! As for the gun thing, I guess my first question would be - why in the heck would you want a gun anyway? Nevertheless, I can't answer that one. We have entirely different gun laws here.....
