My son has a beautiful wife, both in their late 20's, with a strong genetic predisposition for severe depression, mostly on her father's side. Though she's had some problems with depression as well as bulemia in the past, it has recently become rather severe. Though she recognizes it, she refuses to go for help. Says she doesn't like taking pills. I don't buy that. When pushed a bit further, like why she won't see a counselor (no pills to take!), she admits she's afraid that the therapist will tell her she's just plain whacked. Even when assured that any therapist worth his/her salt would never do that, it terrifies her.
I know it's ultimately up to the individual, and that you can't force someone to help herself. But she's in bad shape and getting worse, and given the family history (which includes suicides), we feel like we have to do something.
My son is really at a loss. He's been doing things right...being there for her, supporting her, listening, not judging. But he feels like he's almost enabling her by not being more insistant. What's he to do? Tie her up and carry in?
