Switching from Zoloft to Celexa. Can I just switch over from day to the next??? - Depression Message Board

I've been on 50 mg. of Zoloft for 15 months & doing well (except for some weight gain, no biggie).

I'm on Medicaid & they have decided that Zoloft is too expensive. So my doc has chosen Celexa 20 mg. to take.
But she never told me if it was ok to one day take Zoloft & then begin Celexa the next. She implied that when she said when my script for Zoloft ran out to fill the Celexa.

But I thought I'd ask some folks who've "been there" if it going to as smoothly as what was implied.

Hi

I think you are probably supposed to wean off of the
Zoloft before you take the Celexa.Your doctor should have explained it to you better.I take Celexa and have been very happy with the results.I have had no bad side effects at all.You should contact your doctor and ask about how to wean off Zoloft.

Hi... Actually because both Zoloft and Celexa are SSRI's, it should be fine to just switch. I know from my experience, when my doctor was switching my SSRI's, I could just start taking the new one the next day. Now, that is not the case when going from different antidepressants (the older tri-cyclic or the MAOI inhibitors). You really should double check with your doctor. Good luck..

I agree with JDTweety!! When I was taking Zoloft my doc switched me through the whole range od SSRI's. Celexa is an SSRI, as well as Effexor,Paxil, and several others, so it's fine to go from one to another. If you were changing to a Dopamine inhibitor it might be different, but I think it's safe to say that switching within the SSRI family is fine. If you have any unusal side affects you should ask your doc, but I'm pretty sure you'll be fine.
