Sensitive to Meds? - Depression Message Board

Has anyone had issues with being overly sensitive to anti-depressants, or meds in general? I know I have always been somewhat sensitive to meds, and consequently, I have been through quite a few AD's....none of which I can tolerate (Wellbutrin XL; Buspar; Prozac, and Zoloft). I am currently on Zoloft and MUST get off. I can't stand the side effects. I was on 50mg and for the past few days, backed off to 25mg. I have an appt. with my dr. tomorrow to try and get off (I have only been on it for 3 weeks). I tried not taking a pill yesterday and had such a headache & was so dizzy that I could barely walk straight. I think I'm throwing in the towel with these meds and will focus on getting my hormone meds balanced instead (had a hysterectomy this past year). Maybe the hormone balance will help with the depression!
I give up on the AD's.

I know how you feel. I also gave up on ADs. I had nothing but side effects which I believe only increased my depression. I have always told myself that once I got my physical health back and was free from all side effects/withdrawal effects I would reevaluate whether I wanted to try them again. (But I'm pretty sure I won't, because it was hard enough getting off everything to begin with.)

i´m on zoloft 50 mg a day have no side effects

Hi - I am also very senstive to meds..was given most of the SSRI's..Prozac, Lexapro, Zoloft, and had very bad side effects. I was also given Cymbalta an SSNRI to no avail..and was put in the hospital due to severe side effects. Have you looked into the older meds such as the Tricyclics or Tetracyclics? Maybe talk to your Doctor about them, they don't have the debilitating side effects that the SSRI's do, and I don't have the emotional numbness I had when I took the SSRI's. Currently, I am on Remeron (Mirtazapine)- an older antidepressant (Tetracyclic) that came out in 1997 - it works very well.

I went to my primary md yesterday and told her I give up with the meds, thinking that "this is as good as it gets". She disagreed, and in the next breath mentioned the possibility of trying Effexor. That med scares me....I've heard horror stories about it. I told her that I would like to wait a few weeks (I have an appt. for a full physical with her in 4 weeks). I am hoping that some tweakage in my hormone meds will help with my depression. I just received the results back from my saliva hormone test and those levels are all whacked out (my gyn is mystified!). When it rains, it surely does pour. No hope for the weary.
