wellbutrin xl and sleep aid

I have been prescribed WB XL for mild depression, but haven't taken it yet as I hate not being able to sleep-have that problem anyway. Do any of you take a certain sleep aid along with your WB XL?

My gyno prescribed WB and when I asked her about taking ambien along with it, she said I would have to go to my regular physician to ask that, as she does not prescribe sleep aids. I thought it was kind of strange, but, what do I know??

Just thought I'd ask! Thanks!

Re: wellbutrin xl and sleep aid

I'm pretty sure all M.D.'s can prescribe all drugs. But, as my psychiatrist said, "I could technically prescribe you antibiotics, but would you really want me to?"
I am on Wellbutrin and don't have trouble sleeping. I did for the first couple of weeks, but during that time I was never tired, so I didn't really miss the sleep. (It was actually very nice!!)
I'd go ahead and give it a try. Maybe take it first thing in the morning.

BTW, Wellbutrin is usually not prescribed until other drugs (like SSRI's) are tried first.... What was your GYN's reason for choosing WB? And also...... as a GYN, what is she doing prescribing psychiatric drugs? (Again... All MD's can prescribe all drugs, I think, but generally stick to those related to their field)

Re: wellbutrin xl and sleep aid

Well, I'm kinda new to this depression thing, so I don't even know what ssri's are really. I did go to a psychiatrist almost a year ago-only one time-and she prescribed me prozac, which I was shocked that she even said I was a high functioning depressed person. I never even got it filled because I didn't think she could figure that out in one visit. PLUS, don't want to gain any more weight than I have on me now.

My gyn was listening to me complain that I can't focus or get my life in order, and she first suggested lexapro, but said it could cause weight gain, and I asked her what else is there and she said WB XL. However, after getting it filled and then looking on this forum-I see it can affect your sleep, which I definately don't want to take anything that keeps me up at night. Because lack of sleep for 3 years (I have a DS 3 years old, who started sleeping through the night about 1 month ago) has made me disoriented, can't focus and very unorganized and I feel like my life is caos.

I think I will start taking WB XL in the am and see if it works for me-although they say it takes about 6 weeks for the true effect to kick in.

Re: wellbutrin xl and sleep aid

Pretty much every medication has potential unpleasant side effects. That's why you don't take them unless you feel you really need them, that the benefits will outweigh the negatives.

Another thing you might notice with Wellbutrin is that it makes you twitch sometimes... Honestly, I find the twitching sort of amusing so I don't mind it though.
