How can I raise my self-esteem and gain confidence?

Hello everyone. I'm so glad I joined this board as you all are providing very helpful information!

I am in my early 30's and would like to raise my self-esteem and gain confidence. How can I start doing this?

Thanks so much!

Re: How can I raise my self-esteem and gain confidence?

I have been wondering the same thing my entire life! im 34 and havent found it yet...............through several counselors/phyciatrists...............and many many different types of anti depressants. I still have very very low self esteem and virtually no confidence in myself...............which makes for a very sad exisistence. I just had to post to say to you that i can relate, and have been searching for answer's to this for years! Alot of times i believe that counselor's want to perscribe med's and after spending major amounts of money you find that they arent helping you! It's extremely frusterating and basically if you find a good counselor then that may be the answer to help you with certain tools to gain confidence and self esteem.

Re: How can I raise my self-esteem and gain confidence?

Linda, knowing some of your history it seems that you could gain confidence by becoming more independent. From what you have written, your parents didn't let you venture out far on your own. People gain confidence by doing things on their own and then feeling confident that they did it! If I had a baby and then never let her do anything for herself while she was growing up she would never think that she could do anything on her own and, therefore, would have no confidence in her abilities. I see how my daughters look when they start accomplishing things on their own. There is confidence all over their faces! It would seem that your self-esteem would go up as your confidence goes up. Good luck to you! (You know, you sound better already since your very first post!)
