Sodium valp. as mood leveller?

Hi I have been depressesed for many years. Been on many diff drugs. Most seem to work well for a while (up to a year) befoe I seem to crash. Most recently I been on Duloxetine, but again I have crashed.

Doc is talking of using sodium valproate as a mood leveller. I only know this as a drug for epilepsy. How does it work as a mood leveller?

Re: Sodium valp. as mood leveller?

hey jay,

sodium valproate, or depakote, depakene...has been used for a long time, at least here in the states, as a "mood stabilizer." if you'll just do a search on depakote and mood stabilizer, you'll get so much info. i hope you'll have much more luck with this one. it's an "ol' timer." now they use all kinds of meds (anti-seizure) for other purposes as well, because with time, they find out more about how the brain works....i'm on topamax (an anti-seizure med) because it helps with other stuff (migraines), and i've had very good results with it. so, don't worry about it too much.

wishing you well.

Depakote is not used as much nowadays. The new drugs have less side effects. Lamictal is one. Most of the epilepsy drugs serve the purpose.
