New FDA Warning

There is a new warning out for antidepression medication. The new study shows an increase the risk of suicidal ideation and behavior in patients 18 to 24. This makes the age risk range is now anyone under the age of 24, pretty scary stuff. I wonder when the warning for those over 24 is going to come out.

just thought you should know

Re: New FDA Warning

Oh, fine, T, ya had to add the last line....cause I was gonna say, "well, I have nothing to worry about then!!" thanks a lot.

What's the most scary about antidepressants is how so many doctors know so little about them and prescribe them so much. Too many seem to skip making a follow up appointment within a week or two at most, and leave people dangling at an initial dose, OR start them straight out on a regular dose, don't fill the person in about possible side effects and what to do about them.....need I say more?

Re: New FDA Warning

I keep waiting for a FDA warning to come out stating that AD's are actually Flintstones vitamins just repackaged. I see a conspiracy out there.

take care

Question Re: New FDA Warning

Wait, I'm confused. Are you saying that the FDA report is inaccurate or are you saying you believe it?

I'm 25, but I'm still a little worried since I'm just beyond the 18-24 age range. I had suicidal thoughts before taking Lexapro, and sometimes I still do, but they're less frequent now. When I do go through a bad spell, though, it's really bad. I think my body may still be getting used to the meds - trying to create a balance. I don't know - I just know the suicidal thoughts are scary, and heaven help if they get worse from being on this high-priced anti-depressant!

Vitamins should be included in clinical trials.

Re: New FDA Warning

The fact of the matter is that antidepressants can cause an increase in suicidal ideation in anyone. The warning has always been there; they are just being more vocal about it now.

What to do?

Simple, IMHO.

Moniter yourself. If you start an antidepressant and you feel worse, talk to your doctor immediately. If you take an antidepressant and you have fewer suicidal thoughts, great. Take it and stop worrying. If, after you have been on the med for a reasonable length of time, you continue to be plagued by suicidal thoughts, talk to your doctor - a different dose or a different med might work better.

Re: New FDA Warning

Vitamins? Don't be absurd. There are far more potent things out there than vitamins. Name me one person who OD'd on vitamins. Aspirin is more toxic.

As for suicidal ideation, it is my belief that anyone who has suffered from prolonged depression has thought of it. Not to say they have formulated an actual plan, but we still have freedom of thought. For me, the only time that I have been serious about doing it has been when I was on Zoloft for ten weeks. I have never been that determined, before or after the drug, and it is my personal experience that there are other less potent ways to ride out depression.

Re: New FDA Warning

Paxil was the worst one for me. Scared the hell out of myself more than once. I still get suicidal ideation but not as nearly as bad as when I was on Paxil. Mind you the Zyprexa helps with the ideation.

Re: New FDA Warning

Seymour, can I ask where you read this "latest news"? For the life of me, I can't find that any new warnings about antidepressants. (This is an old thread).

Zed, try not to let this worry you so much. Yes, it is possible for antidepressants to make you feel worse and even suicidal. But, that's very rare. If you are so depressed that you feel you need an antidepressant and the doc prescribes one, take it. If you feel worse, call your doc ASAP. More likely than not, you will NOT feel worse. Good luck!

Re: New FDA Warning

I'm suicidal without them so I might as well take them.

This news is on the internet. The conclusion is based on a series of studies.....ad's are no better than placebos for this age bracket.

Re: New FDA Warning

Some would argue the same with adults.
