help !! my girlfriend is depressed....

hi, i'm new here. need some advice please...

i think my girlfriend is suffering from depression. she's very moody, gets agitated easily, and has become quiet and withdrawn. she has problem coping with her job, not sure if it's due to the depression.

i'm cracking my head how to help her because it hurts just to see her unhappy. how can i help ??? i'm at my wits end. i tried to talk her to see a doctor, but she's resistant about the idea. who should i approach ? shall i take her to a GP or psychiatrist straight away or ?? does counselling work ?

thanks
zak

Your girlfriend should go in and see her family doctor who can help determine the best course of action. Therapy does work for some people it depends on type of depression, type of therapy and how much the person puts into it.

Re: help !! my girlfriend is depressed....

Seeing a therapist is a good place to start. Talking with a professional about what's going on in one's life is very important. There are many things that can contribute to depression. Some of them may not be obvious to the person. Or there may be issues that a person would prefer not to look at. A therapist is good at helping people fully understand why they are depressed. Their support is helpful. My doctor said those patients that work the hardest are the most successful overcoming depression. Easier said than done, but I think he's right. Staying socially and physically active is important.

Re: help !! my girlfriend is depressed....

thanks for your advice.
now my challenge lies in persuading her to see a medical professional. she's very resistant and does not see how it can help her. she blames her situation on a series of circumstances and is dead set that "nothing can be done to make things better". i keep telling her that as long as she believes that things are not gonna work out, they won't. yes things don't look good now, but if she doesn't make the slightest effort to try, the status quo will always prevail. it's very tough trying to make a depressed person see a different point of view because her mind is so preoccupied with negative thoughts right now.
