Prozac (Fluoxetine) and Stomach Issues - Need Help!

I just started taking Prozac (fluoxetine) on Sunday. I am on 10mg for 7 days, and planning to go to 20mg after. Anyway, I am having major GI tract issues. Basically, cramping and a "sick" feeling in my gut, borderline constipation, and awful flatulence. It's bad enough that I may stop the drug. My GI tract doesn't feel well at all.

Has anyone else experienced this? Did these symptoms go away? Serotonin plays a role in the GI tract, but I cannot say I've had issues like this with Lexapro.

Re: Prozac (Fluoxetine) and Stomach Issues

I believe that side effect is pretty common in a lot of the antidepressants on the market. I have the same problem and it is pretty much a daily issue. I take a softener but it only helps so much

Perhaps it's common with all SSRIs - I don't know. I have used Wellbutrin, and it didn't cause any GI tract problems (but it's not an SSRI).

Re: Prozac (Fluoxetine) and Stomach Issues

I take wellbutrin, remeron, effexor, zyprexa, lithium and temazapam so the mix is pretty hard on the stomach. Could not tell you which one is responsible though.

Re: Prozac (Fluoxetine) and Stomach Issues

Well, it's been about 7 weeks now and the stomach issues have greatly improved. My GI tract is doing much better at this stage than when I was on Lexapro. However, I don't think the Prozac is working nearly as well on my depression.
