prozac and pregnancy

I don't know which board to post this on but I thought I might get better responses here. I am currently taking prozac (20 mg) and risperdal (.5 mg) and am hoping to ease off the risperdal now that the prozac has kicked in and seems to be handling my depression with anxiety and intrusive thoughts. To make a long story short, I was excited about having a third child before my current bout of depression and anxiety. Now that I am feeling better, I again feel the urge to have a third child. Anyone been on Prozac when pregnant? What have you heard?

Re: prozac and pregnancy

hi,

i haven't been on prozac myself, but i've read stories of women who have been on this med, as well as on paxil, and they said they had healthy babies in the end. best thing to do however, is what everyone on here would be likely to tell you--and that is, to speak to your ob-gyn about this. i'm sure she/he know much about this, since i'm sure you're not the only woman on earth who's trying to have a child while on these type of meds!!!!! also ask your prescribing doctor. between your ob-gyn and your prescribing doc, they should manage to weigh the pros and cons of you being on an antidepressant and still have a child!

God bless, and much luck to you!!!

Re: prozac and pregnancy

Hi,

I agree with Dakota Skye, but just wanted to add - I am actively trying to conceive and was prescribed Zoloft. My GP said it is the anti-depressant women take when they do IVF... my endocrinologist (hormone specialist) said it is the one least likely to have any effect on any potential child. In fact, my endocrinologist told me I was more likely to get pregnant on Zoloft than without it (but I have fertility issues, and he was talking about my particular situation - it's by no means a fertility drug!).

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that, depending on the situation, some doctors are quite happy for - and would even insist on - you taking meds while trying to conceive.

Re: prozac and pregnancy

I changed from cymbalta to zoloft because I'm trying to wean off all my medications (except the zoloft) so I can try to get pregnant. I have a lot of anxiety issues so going off the klonipin is killing me:) Although I was at 6mg and now I'm down to 1-2 so I'm at least getting there. I also have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue and so I'm going off my pain medications too. I knew I couldn't go without everything so I'm trying to just get down to my 300mg zoloft. I was told prozac or zoloft were the preferred antidepressants during pregnancy. However, with the recent info on birth defects with Paxil my ob/gyn would like me to go off everything but I know for me that is just not possible.
Good Luck

I have anxiety and depression and was on celexa few months and I told my OBGYN I wanted to get pregnant. She told me that prozac and zoloft are safer for pregnancy. I am a little nervous about taking it. I was told if the benefits outweigh the risks then I should do it. When I have my "bad days" as I call it I can't eat or sleep. I think that is more harmful to the baby than being on meds. I would definately like to know if anyone has been on prozac when they were pregnant and how it went.

Re: prozac and pregnancy

Hi ladies,

Just wanted to update you on my situation. As some of you may know, I have experienced a number of years of infertility and have been on treatments for over a year. My doc wanted me to start taking zoloft, since he argued that I would be more likely to fall pregnant on it than without it. As it happens, we fell pregnant naturally on my first full cycle of taking zoloft - on my first month of taking zoloft at 50mg. It is just amazing! I can't believe it!! :-)

I am 7 weeks today and am still on zoloft. I'm not sure if/when I will come off, but the doc wants to reassess at 12 weeks.

All the best,
Michelle :-)
