Books on Depression

My husband suffers with depression and has for many years. I do not have much knowledge about this disease. He is also a recovering alcoholic and drug user. I am not sure if his depression stems from the alcohol and drugs or if he had depression before he got into this life style he had for 35 years.

I am looking for any books that are good out there that I can read to understand depression. If anyone has any info for me that would be great Thanks

Re: Books on Depression

My guess would be the depression came before the abuse. A lot of people with depression use drugs and alcohol to go somewhere else for awhile. By your user name I am going to guess your Canadian. If so the Canadian Mental Health Association is full of local resourses and educational material.

take care

Re: Books on Depression

I don't think books are that bad of an idea, but they only give statistics and physiological information about depression, for the most part. Even autobiographies on the subject are just ONE perspective. The great thing about this thread, is that there are hundreds of people from all over the world with different symptoms and a more personal take on the condition. I think it's much better to chat with us for an understanding of depression. We tend to be much more descriptive and elaborate.
