Pros and Cons of Meds?

I'm at the loss as to what I should do about myself. I suffer depression and anxiety with added tricho. I've been on medications before but with surrounding stressors, they didn't seem to help all to much. I'm reluctant to ask to be put on them again, because in the future I'll want to be off them when I get pregnant and I'm afraid that being taken off of them will put me in the same rut I am in now. How much of a boost will antidepressants give me? Will it be significant enough - with counseling - to be worth the trouble and the price?

From what I have learned and experienced anti-depressants do not give you a boost. Without getting technical they stabilize the release and absorption of hormones which are "in charge" of emotions. So all they are doing is correcting a physiological abnormality in the brain which allows you to function as if that abnormality did not exist.

It is like a diabetic who needs insulin. When they take the insulin it does nothing except keep their body working the way it is supposed to.

Is it worth it? For me, a life saver. I would suggest talking to a psychiatrist (who is trained specifically to deal with mental and emotional disorders and the treatment thereof).

There are a lot of medications out there to treat depression and there might be one that is safe to take while pregnant. Again I would like to stress that it is important to go to the right source to get the right information.

Good Luck.

Treelover.

Re: Pros and Cons of Meds?

Paxil is not advised for pregnant women due to birth defects. Given the notorious withdrawal syndrome...probably not a good choice.
