what dose of st. john's wort?

I'd like to try st. john's wort for depression, but I don't know which brand to buy or what dosage to take. I was on Paxil, but I don't like taking drugs, I'd rather something natural. Thank you.

Re: what dose of st. john's wort?

You should start at the lowest effective dose. I take 300mgs. It's the lowest dose you can start at, I think. I take Solaray brand. You can get this brand at health stores. It doesn't matter which brand you take, though. Just make sure you take the extract version, it works faster.

Re: what dose of st. john's wort?

I bought a bottle of 300mgs yesterday and it says extract. So I'm just going to take 1 every day. Is there any point at which I should up the dose? I think the bottle says to take 3 a day as a "dietary supplement".

Re: what dose of st. john's wort?

I think my bottle says the same thing, but I only take one as well. Like I said, the lowest effective dose should be used. That dose may vary from person to person. You can up the dose if you don't feel better after about three or four weeks. I started to feel better by the end of the first week, though. The maximum dose is 900mgs. Good luck. So far so good for me.

900 mgs was used in most of the SJW studies. One study was as high as 1800. No effect for me.

Wow, I don't think I'd go quite that high.

Everything I have read says 900mgs is a typical daily dose.
