question

i have a friend who went through depression and she doesn't remember a lot of things. does having depression make you not remember anything? if so why?

It does affect your ability to concentrate and remember little things. It's not like amnesia though.

Depression can make someone lose interest in a lot of things they used to like. If you lose your motivation to really pay attention to things, you're not likely to remember them.

Depression can have a major impact on memory. Memory should improve as the depression gets better. The hippocampus tends to get smaller in depressed people over time and that's the memory part of the brain.

The growth of new neurons(neurogenesis) in the hippocampus appears to play a large role in recovery from depression. Exercise and antidepressants are associated with neurogenesis. Blueberries are thought to help memory and slow brain aging. In lab animals blueberry extract promotes neurogenesis in the hippocampus. It would be interesting if that is the case with people.

I must have eaten pounds and pounds of blueberries last summer and I do feel sharper. I also started an exercise program this summer.
