Is wellbutrin an ssri or not???

I am getting so confused! My doctor switched me to wellbutrin sr to start taking friday and I asked him if it was an ssri and he said yes.I asked because I was concerned about withdrawals going off the celexa.I've been reading post after post on Wellbutrin and some people are saying it's an ssri and others say it's not.I also went to different web-sites and got conflicting information as well.I'm so confused and scared i'm going to have withdrawals coming off this celexa on Friday.Does anyone know for sure. Please help!! Re: Is wellbutrin an ssri or not???

NO,it is DEFINITLY NOT an SSRI!Here is the actual wellbutrin site, you need to go there and read the complete prescribing info.Your Dr told you that it is an ssri????!!!I'd print off that info and take it to him/her,that is really bad!Anyway, here is the site- <A HREF="http://www.wellbutrin-sr.com/dtc/home.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.wellbutrin-sr.com/dtc/home.html</A>
Good luck!Kristi
Ps,I would either call your Dr or see him to discuss this!!

Re: Is wellbutrin an ssri or not???

By the way, SSRIs only work on the neurotransmissor serotonin, Wellbutrin is a weak blocker of the neuronal uptake of serotonin and norepinephrine; it also inhibits the neuronal re-uptake of dopamine to some extent. It is more than an antidepressant, it also produces a dose-related stimulant effect in the central nervous system.

Hi JoJo!Did you check out that site? How long have you been on celexa? I am no Dr,but I think that maybe you may have mild withdrawl at first, but as the new drug kicks in I think you'll be fine!Since wellbutrin still has an effect on your serotonin, even a small one,it should compensate! What dose are you on? Let us know how this goes!Kristi

Re: Is wellbutrin an ssri or not???

Wellbutrin is not an SSRI. It's in a class by itself. It is a weak serotonin reuptake inhibitor and it also effects dopamine.

I would definately ask your doc about his misinformation. NOT GOOD!

Also, there is a 5th SSRI, Luvox, that is used for OCDC.

Take care. If you're seeeing a family doc, you may want to see a psychiatrist instead, they are the experts on these meds.

Re: Is wellbutrin an ssri or not???

Hi Kristis, Yes I did check out the site.Thank you I found it very helpful.I was on the Celexa since March.I t worked awesome at first but just seemed to get weaker and weaker.I took prozac before that for about the same amount of time and the exact same thing happened even after dosage increases.I am scared to change to something that is not an ssri but maybe thats just what I need.Wish me luck!I'll let you know how it goes.
