Headaches on paxil

I've been on 20mgs. of paxil for about 4 weeks now. My depression seems to be better. Some days I feel really great other days just so so.

The last three days I've had this headache that won't go away no matter what I do. I've tried over the counter migraine formulas at no avail.

Yesterday I had the headache, was extremely tired and so......... hungry all day long. Oh yea and I also have this feeling of bladder irritation thats nagging me.

Has anyone else had any of these symptoms on paxil or other ssri's. I'v e heard some people say they gained a lot of weight on paxil and I can't do that. I freak out at 2 pounds!

Thanks for any info. , suggestions etc....

Olivia

Re: Headaches on paxil

Hi Olivia,
I have only just started Paxil (10mg), my doctor warned me about the most common side-effect (sleepiness), but didn't say much about the other side effects.
However, a friend has been taking Paxil, and she told me after about 2 weeks on it, she started getting headaches, although not as bad as you are describing (i.e. not migranes). After about 2 weeks of these headaches, they went away. She also told me that her sleepiness also greatly decreased after about 4 weeks, and now she doesn't seem to have any sideeffects.
Unfortunately, it seems as though the sideeffects vary so much in type and in length from person to person, although my understanding is that USUALLY the sideeffects do tend to go away after awhile.

Right now, only 3 days into Paxil, I'm experiencing alot of sleepiness, and a bit of 'not myself' - this is alot faster than the sideeffects kicked in for my friend, who said she felt nothing for over a week of taking 10mg...we're all different I guess.

I really hope the sideffects don't get worse, and actually start to go away for me pretty soon...this is my first time on anti-depressants so I'm a bit nervous. I also hope that it has the benefits my doctor thinks it will.

I hope you feel better, and let us know how it goes <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

Re: Headaches on paxil

I initially took 10mg each morning for 4 days then I had to take 20mg. I ended up in bed sick for 3 days. I was so tired from insomnia, nausea and headaches. I was so scared I went on St Johns for 2 months but it didnt help much so I tried 10mg at BEDTIME for a month without any probs so now I am taking 20mg at BEDTIME I have found I do wake during the night but I doze off. I am tired the next day but from what Ive read these side effects wear off after a few weeks to I will try for a bit longer. Good luck and Merry Christmas from New Zealand

Re: Headaches on paxil

Hey Olivia,
Yes headaches among other side effects are caused by this drug. I started taking it right after it came out in 1996 and took it for about 4 months. I had headaches, constipation and last but certainly not least it made it very difficult for me to ejaculate..(I'm sure that is more than you wanted to know). But, that is the reason I had my doc switch me to another drug. I can't remember but I don't think it helped my depression much but I was not on it very long. Hang in there a little while longer and see if the headaches go away.

Re: Headaches on paxil

Well, I have gone down hill rapidly on Paxil.
yesterday and today both I'm having terrible nausea. I threw up this morning, and have ate hardly anything in the past 48 hours. I feel like throwing up again, and my stomach is empty.
This only four days into my Paxil use!

I'm going to stop it. I feel horrible, I was going to try and continue on it, hoping this would get better, but with Christmas I don't feel I can wait it out. I guess I chose a stupid time to start it (5 days before Christmas), but I didn't think I was going to have this kind of nausea. The fatigue/sleepiness is still very intense too.

I guess I'll talk to my doctor on Wednesday or Thursday to let him know, and to ask him what I should do next.

Big thumbs down for Paxil <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif">
I hope others have better luck than I did.

Re: Headaches on paxil

You should be on 10 mg for 6 days before going to 20 mg. I don't know what you started at, but it should not be 20 mg; all kinds of side effects on that dose to start.
