Serzone side effects

I have been prescribed Serzone for my depression and sleep disorder, but I have not been able to take it regularly because of the side effects. The nausea is bothersome, but I'm only supposed to take it at night so I feel like I could work through that, but it makes me feel bad the next day quite often. I get pain in my neck and shoulders that is sometimes really bad. I also notice that I see tracers when I have taken the Serzone. I have only taken it four times and stopped because I'm supposed to graduate up to a higher dosage and am scared that the side effects will just get worse. Does anyone else have any experience with this and if so, how long should I expect to have to take the medicine before the side effects subside? I'm really very anxious to get on the medicine regularly because I need it badly. The Serzone was chosen specifically by my Doctor because it will supposedly really help me sleep. Several years ago I was prescribed Trazedone for the same purpose, but it had it's own set of problems and I subsequently stopped taking it as well. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Serzone side effects

I just recently tried switching to Serzone. The side effects were so bad I had to stop. I was up to 300mg/day, after a 3 week period. My side effects were: sore neck, headache, urinary difficulty, dizziness, confusion, concentration and fatigue. And it didn't help me sleep any better. It's been HELL. I'm now switching to Paxil. If you want to find out more about a particular med, and it's possible side effects, go to the library, find a "PDR" (Physicians Desk Referance) and look it up. Remember, the same meds affect different people differently. Good luck and please be an informed consumer on the meds issue. Bob

Re: Serzone side effects

I take Serzone now for almost 3 weeks. I started at 100 mg a day divided in two doses. You are taking the whole dose before bedtime. I know the docs and many people say they get drowsey. I take 450 mg now divided [200 a.m. and 250 p.m.] and I have had insomnia. By the way, Trazadone has similarities to Serzone. I got a headache the day of upped my dose so I took a Maxalt [migrain tablet] and it went away. this happened one other time. I only had nausea half a day when I went from 100 mg per day to 200 mg. I don't believe Serzone makes everybody sleepy, and if you divide the dose the side effects may calm down and you can try it for 4 or 5 weeks. that's what I'm doing now. Call your doc. Good luck.

Re: Serzone side effects

How long till it took Serzone to work for you? I'm just going to 500 mg, and I'm on it one day short of 4 weeks. I had crying jags yesterday, and don't feel good like when I was on Paxil. Serzone has no side effects for me except insomnia. Most people say they get drowsy but others have insomnia also. Shouldn't this be working by now? It did for a little while and stopped twice during the last 4 weeks. I may have to give up on it,but I don't want to. I see mypdoc next week. Any advice?

It does help alot too, so dont be afraid of the temporary effects they do go away in time. I only had the side effects for 3 weeks, now, nothing.

Re: Serzone side effects

I was on Serzone for about a year. I went through a month of torture with the side effects - sleeplessness, neck pains, nausea - you name it, I had it! However, after a month or so, the side effects did completely subside.

Bear with it for a little longer. If they haven't gone after a couple of months, see your doctor. The newer antidepressants have much less side effects and it may be worth a change.

Good luck!

Hi..I have been on serzone for 6 months. I had to increase by 25 mg each week becaue of side affects I have with all meds. I am on 200mg and can't increase anymore because of low blood pressure. I am doing better because the anxiety is very slight and the depression is mild and managable. I am sleeping all night. I am going to stay where I am for now. I think over time it began to take affect, even the low dosage. I didn't like the side affects but they are gone now.
