Hi I'm really new to this but I stopped my daily doses of Prozac - 40mg and Ritalin - 30mg.
I haven't been to see my psychologist or family doctor in about 2 months. I was just wondering what the effects (if any) are of completely stopping my medications.
The withdrawal symptoms from anti-depressants can vary from person to person, just like the side-effects. You may experience nothing at all or you may experience symptoms such as tiredness, dizziness, headaches or insomnia.
Is there any particular reason why you have stopped taking your medication? Have you run out of refills, don't think the meds are working or that you no longer need them? Have these meds been causing unbearable side-effects? No matter what the reason is I think it's always best to talk to your doctor first before discontinuing your medication to avoid creating any complications to your health.

Hello pjsy,
Discontinuing meds abruptly isn't advisable.
It seems that you have severed ties with all of the avenues of help at your disposal.
Have you noticed any improvement in your mood, etc?
Please don't burn all your bridges;you never know when returning may benefit you.
I have seen and heard of too many instances where a person tried to go through life without assistance;the results were, for the most part, unfavorable.
If you are up to it,could you explain your position further.Somehow I feel that something is being left out here...
No pressure.
I understand that but at the same time I feel like the medications stopped working. I just started going back to feeling like how I did before I started the meds.
It's been just over a month now since I stopped taking the meds. Like since the new year I went from daily use to occasional use about once/week and now I'm not taking the medication at all.
I just can't bring myself to take it. It went from not remembering to take the meds, to just feeling sick by the thought of taking the meds.

Hello pjsy,
This information needs to be relayed to your prescribing physician. They can only be of help if they are aware of your specific situation.
Please don't give up that easily.Sometimes different regiments of medications are required to attain a desired result.
You said you are just starting to feel like you did before you started taking your meds but you didn't say how you were feeling before you started taking them or why your doctor prescribed them in the first place. That is very important info the doctor needs to know.
If you are feeling great, then that means he won't make you take more. If you are feeling depressed and don't want to feel that way any longer, you may have to go back on them.

The decision is yours....
I am new here and I just wanted to comment on this discussion. I had been taking Effoexor 150 mg daily for about 15 years then I was switched to Pristiq at 100 mg daily for about 5 years. My old psychiatrist went back to teaching and my new psychiatrist, after evaluating me for about 1 year, suggested that it may be time for me to go off my medications. I was nervous and happy at the same time because I didn't want to be on anti-depressants for the rest of my life! So I decided I wanted off and my new psychiatrist weaned me off and I have never felt better!! The only withdrawal symtoms I have had are a little diarreah, nausea and dizziness. Those symptoms lasted for about 1 week and after my 2nd week I only had little bouts of dizziness which lasted for about 3 seconds. I'd like to say to the person who stopped taking their medications and feels better do not start taking them again. I believe alot of people do not need to be on anti-depressants and they are missing out on life as you should see it. At the time I went on anti depressants I was having a very, very rough time and my counselor suggested it. After a while it becomes a habit and not a cure. If you can live your life without ant-depressants (like I am doing now) then do it!!
