I think a pet is a great idea (cat or dog) I'm a cat person myself but with a dog you can take him in the park and you will often see people who are complete stranger's stopping to talk about their dog's.
Also I found joining a Church a good place for meeting people. Where do you work and what about your work mates, perhap's you could ask one or two around to your house for coffee one morning.
Do you read if so maybe you could join a reading group. Your local paper will advertice thing happening in your area.
It's all very well taliking to people online but you need physical interaction with people and it can happen if you make the effort to join some places where other's meet.
