Depakote????

I have been on every med...ssri and snri. Only a few worked for agitative depression. Has anyone taken depakote? I read it works for the agitation. I thought I was doing OK on Prozac until my family pointed out I am snapping at the smallest things and gritchy. And any side effects?

Thank you!!

Re: Depakote????

It did seem to help my father. He was bipolar 2 and often agitated. The Depakote (he was on a very low dosage) did seem to help. Wishing you well.

Re: Depakote????

Depakote can have massive side-effects, many unpleasant ones, but it is probably very dosage-related. A small dose might work out OK, but it would never be my first choice as a patient (I have BPI). Unless you are truly bipolar, I think you have some friendler choices to explore with your doc. Depakote often causes weight gain, cognitive dulling, lethargy, just to name a few. (Remember, it was originally designed for epilepsy before it started being used for other disorders, so it targets different parts of the brain than a drug like Prozac.) Have you explored any of the benzodiazepines, like clonazepam? They're so calming, and clonazepam saved my life. Good luck.

Re: Depakote????

I currently take clonopin .5 3x a day for 18 years. Any other suggestions I should ask about?

Talking Re: Depakote????

I have a sister who used to experience really severe agitation with her depression (she's not bipolar & hasn't needed meds for many years). This was before the advent of SSRI's and she got tremendous relief, and a real calming effect, from an anti-D called Desyrel (don't know the generic name). She was a new woman. Drugs from the past can still be a great thing to try, even though they get overshadowed/overlooked by newer classes of meds as the years roll by.

Best of Luck to You!
