Diabetes cause bad teeth?

Hello everyone.
I recently read somewhere that Diabetes can cause your teeth to decay quite fast. I am type 1 insulin dependent and have been for roughly 6 years. I have had a couple teeth just crack for no reason, and just had another one crack off a good sized piece today. Is the link between bad teeth and diabetes true?

If it is, is there anyway to prevent, or slow down the process?

Thanks!

I definitely have heard that diabetes puts you at increased risk for gum disease, but not sure about tooth decay and enamel problems.

Re: Diabetes cause bad teeth?

I am courious about this also. My son who is type 1 diagnosed a year ago has a terrible time with his teeth. The fillings fall out all the time. He has the worst teeth of all my kids. i have heard the gum disease thing before too but I always wondered if diabetes did other things to the teeth as well.

Re: Diabetes cause bad teeth?

mnmama,
I've been having bad time with my teeth for a few years also. Fillings come out, teeth crack, and just seem to fall apart every now and then. Just went to fix another one today that probably won't last too long. I just hope I don't need false teeth before my parents do.

In theory,Uncontroled Diabetes can cause your teeth to degrade faster. (becuase of the dehydration in the gums and mouth)
