New / just diognosed - Diabetes Message Board

Hello all,

I just found out today that I am now a diabetic. While doing a little research I found this site and hope that the information we share will help each other in the future. I have read alot of the post here and you all seem well informed and have some of the same questions as I have. As I am new to this, there will be a lot of questions at first, such as what medications seem to work best and if anyone uses the Natural remedies that I have been reading about. It looks like mine may be hereditary. My father and my aunt have diabeties also and they are in their early 70's.

A little about me. I just turned 50 in April so I concider myself lucky to have lived a good life so far and with the proper help and advice will continue to do so. I am an active outdoorsman and still work for a living. I have a family with 3 children 26 / 23 and 14. Funny thing that tipped me off was our cat that passed away this year, she was 15 years old. One weekend she started acting funny and had the same symptoms as I have had the past few weeks and was diognosed with diabeties. With the symptoms I had I was able to to tell the Dr. what to look for. I hate being right sometimes.

I am a positive person and hope most of you are too and I am sure we can make the most of this situation. Any thoughts or shared experiances will be greatly recieved. Just remember there are those that still depend on you, so you will have to put up a good fight to stay healthy.

Welcome to the board! I can tell you're a positive person just by reading your first post. That will take you far (and has already) in the next phase of your life; living with diabetes. I'm sorry to hear about your cat. I'm a cat-lover and know how hard it is to have a pet die. She might have saved your life and that's neat in my book! I have Type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed at 12 (22 years ago) and started with an insulin pump last August. I hope you like it here. There are a lot of great people here. I look forward to getting to know you.

Just a question to all. Of the all the low carb diets is there one in particular that Type II people use or that is recommended by Doctors. The ones I am familiar with are Adkins, South Beach Diet and the one I have been studying is called The Glycemic Index Diet. All are low carb diets with some deviations in each. Also found a small section in the American Diabeties Assoc. Complete Guide to Diabeties on heathy foods.

I haven't been back to the Dr. yet this week to get more information from the dietician but was just wondering if anyone used any of these diet plans. Also it looks like some over-the-counter meds can cause problems, such as cold and flu meds and some pain killers.
