Shoulder pain and diabetes

I have been a diabetic for 15+ yrs. and approximately 6 months ago, I started feeling pain on my right shoulder. It feels like arthritis. Yesterday, I met someone who is also diabetic and he told me that he has the same shoulder pains for many years and that his doctor told him that the pain is related to his diabetes.

I will appreciate if anyone with the same problem would help me out. What should I do? Any specific exercise to get rid of the pain? Any pain medication? What were you told by your doctor? Any other information that you believe might help me?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Shoulder pain and diabetes

I have diabetes type 2,along with peripheral neuropathy, pain in hands and feet, I recently have neck and back pain. My family doctor and a doctor with the Veteran's Administration both told me to use Tylenol Arthritis pain caplets- 650mg twice a day as needed, recently I have been taking two in the morning and two before bedtime and am getting lots of relief. I think it's worth a try to check with your doctor and make sure you can take these. GOOD LUCK

Re: Shoulder pain and diabetes

Are you having a problem with limited range of motion? If so, you might be developing "frozen shoulder"...it's a form of adhesive capsulitis that's very common in diabetics. Sometimes physical therapy helps (along with pain meds), and sometimes it goes away on its own, but it can take months. If it's interfering with your normal activities, see your doctor about it.

Re: Shoulder pain and diabetes

I am a type 1 diabetic (25 years) and I am 37 years old. I had shoulder pain and it went down my arm. I was diagnosed with Bursitis. Maybe ask your dr about that. Good Luck

Re: Shoulder pain and diabetes

Hi. I have had frozen shoulder too. It is common in people with diabetes. The typical treatment for this is warmth and manipulation. Physiotherapy works well as long as they don't treat you as though it's tendonitis. If they do, they will put cold on it and that makes it worse (first hand experience). I go to my accupuncturist when mine flares up. He does both accupuncture and accupressure and it clears up quickly.

Good luck.
