Got my A1C results back today........................... - Diabetes Message Board

They are 5.5 and my glucose level prior was 126. These are the first tests I've had done. I am female, age 28. I have one cousin with diabetes already. My doctor has decided that based on those test results, I do not have diabetes. He doesn't want to pursue anything further. I was just looking for some input as to whether or not I should change docs or agree with his decision to do nothing and not rule me as a diabetic because as diabetics, the board members know more about diabetes than I do. Thank you.

I believe that normal (non-diabetic) A1C is 4 - 6%. The goal for diabetics is <7%.

I also believe that current guidelines for fasting blood glucose levels (i.e. first thing in the morning) is that 60 - 100 is normal. A diagnosis of pre-diabetes results when fasting BG is 101 - 125. A diagnosis of diabetes results when fasting BG is 126 - 199 TWO different times (that's right, if you get a 126 one day and a 125 the next, you're considered pre-diabetes), or a single BG of 200+.

Your A1C looks good, but you probably should have had the second glucose test.

Please see my answer under your other post. I just wanted to add here that it's unclear whether that 126 you had was a fasting level or not. If it was, your doctor should do at least one more, and preferably 2 or 3 more, fasting bg levels because if 2 of them are at 126, that's enough to diagnose diabetes.

Since your A1c is excellent, it's possible you're at the beginning stages and this could be easily handled with diet and exercise. Or you may just have HYPOglycemia, which again can be handled fairly easily with diet and doing so will help prevent it from becoming diabetes at a later date.

If, in fact, that 126 WAS a fasting level, then you are right to be concerned about your doctor, as it would appear he's not very up to date on the treatment of diabetes. If it was NOT fasting, then he had no way of knowing about that 51 that you posted, and so his assessment was fair based on what he knew.

Thank you both. NO, the 126 was not fasting. I had toast with butter on it before hand because I was just going for a swelling between my thumb and fingers on both hands so I did not know blood was being taken. I am going to monitor my own blood for awhile and see if I keep getting low levels. Thank you again.

I went back again and the doctors explanation now is that I have reactive hypoglycemia and that's it. He told me to eat less than I do and I don't eat that much and to exercise which I do so he tells me to step up the pace. He told me to buy the glycemic index book and try that. So that's it.Thanks for your help.
