New Here - Diabetes Message Board

I am new to the Diabetes message board...My Boyfriend has this disease, he's known for about 9 months now, I don't know too much about it, except it makes him so tired, and have headaches, and he gets so upset about not being able to eat what he wants. He also get embarrased when we go somewhere to eat and has to carry his little kit to give himself insulin before we eat...I love him so much, and want to know any info I can about how to make him feel ok about all this...

Hi, It is a process to feel "ok" with this disease. I've had it for about 4 years and I don't know if I'll ever feel ok. I am working through the proscess of acceptance and learning how to deal with the limitations of having diabetes, how to control it and delay and or limit the complication.

I think what has helped me the most is to get on the internet and read and or get books to read and educate myself about this disease and how to live with it. I am glad I found this board. It seems to have some people with a great deal of knowledge who offer support.

Two web sites I found that helped a lot were mendosa.com(esp look to the glycemic index) and ? the .com but search for Dr Bernstein's Diabetic solutions-it tells of his book. Good luck

Hi!

I can't offer advise on how to feel okay about having diabetes because I haven't been diagnosed with it. I do have impaired glucose tolerance, that I'm sure of from my own experimentation. It's not a good feeling, knowing that eating certain foods (that I love)is causing my blood glucose to either spike or remain high longer than what is considered normal and not knowing the implications of this.

The Joslin Diabetes Center (Boston) has a good website with lots of information as well as a discussion forum with diabetes educators and nutrionists on it to answer questions.

I've had diabetes for 24 years. I've been able to eat almost anything except for high sugars like candy bars. I've been on the same dosage for all those years. I always try to get plenty of excercise. Try to limit his intake. When I eat too much, I feel tired too.
