Are hypoglycemics at risk for diabetes? - Diabetes Message Board

I have been told I have had some "hypoglycemic episodes" in the past few years. I am 27, a runner, healthy, don't smoke, don't drink. I have had a few episodes in which I found myself shaking, with tremors, weak, disconnected.

The Dr. told me today he thought my glucose was a little high, though it was an hour after I had had lunch. Then, he took it again today -- AGAIN after I'd eaten. I'll get the results from that soon.

I eat a lot of simple carbs right before a run -- potatoes, bread, OJ, gatorade... and I also have a bit of a candy habit. For that reason, I never have candy at home -- just eat it when at work (not too much, usually).

I have always been thin and never "worried" about my weight, but definitely spent a lot of time in the early nineties doing the high carb, low fat diet... now I'm wondering if this hurt me.

Anyone tell me if these things sound like risk factors?

The high carb diet probably didnt help. I would wait to get your blood tests back before you panic though. Having an elevated sugar level one hour after a meal is not bad depending on how high it was and how much carbs you had in that meal. The best way to monitor sugar levels is over time. Im betting the test he took on you measures your average glucose level over the last 3 months. Dont worry until you get your results back.
